It can feel like trying to shout across a stadium during a football game.

And nobody can hear you!

That’s where your Etsy search optimization comes in!

Think of it as a megaphone for your shop.

Helping your products stand out and land right in front of your ideal customers eyes.

What is Etsy Search Optimization, and Why Should You Care?

Etsy’s search engine is how customers find your products.

Mastering Etsy search optimization is basically the secret sauce to getting found (and making sales).

So, Yeah you should care! (incase you didn’t catch on)

When someone searches for something, Etsy pulls up the most relevant listings based on keywords, shop performance, and customer engagement.

That means your job is to make sure your listings are exactly what Etsy (and your customers) want to see.

And more importantly what your customers are looking for.

So here’s the 2 step process getting found in Etsy using Etsy search optimization.

2 Steps to get your Listing Found in Etsy Search…

Step 1: The Basics- Nailing Etsy SEO

Here’s the deal—keywords are EVERYTHING!!

These are the words your dream customers are typing into the search bar.

When they’re hunting for your something amazing, these are the words they’re using.

Here’s how to use them:

Make Your Title Game Strong:

Use your most important keywords at the start of your title. Think, “personalized leather journal” instead of just “leather journal.”

If your offering a customizable product you want that right up front.

Because, that’s an important aspect of your product!

Tag It Up:

Use ALL 13 tags!

And don’t be afraid to mix your short & long-tail keywords (like “boho decor”). and (like “handmade boho macrame wall hanging”).

Categories and Attributes:

These work like bonus keywords—Etsy uses them to decide where your listings should show up.

Step 2: Boost Your Listing in Etsy Search

Once your listings are matched to a search, Etsy decides how high to rank them.

Here’s how you can give your listings a little nudge toward the top:

Relevancy is Key:

Match your tags and titles to real searches your customers are making. The closer the match, the better!

*Pro Tip: Act as if your about to look for your item on Etsy..

What are the exact words you would type into the search bar if your trying to find your product?

That should be your Title! At the very least in your keywords!

Make sure your Main Photo Pops:

Your main photo needs to be a show stopper & stop scrolls in their tracks.

Bright, clear, and inviting, pictures are a must.

And your first image needs to show your customer exactly what you are trying to sell them.

It shouldn’t leave them guessing “am I getting the pencil or the pencil case?”

They need to know what they’re buying before they’ll click.

Reviews & Responses:

Happy customers + fast replies = Etsy thinks you’re a rockstar… and, duh you are!

Keep those reviews glowing and those messages answered as quickly as possible.

If you see you have a message its best just to handle and open it then. Try not to think “oh,I’ll get to that as soon as I’m finished with this other thing”

Because, if you’re anything like me you’ll end up forgetting. Until you finally remember a few days laser.

And by then its already been to long!

And I don’t have a time machine but if you do feel free to use it at this point. Because otherwise you can’t take back the time you left your customer hanging.

So, what I’m trying to say is messages are important!

Because your customers are important!

So, make sure you answer their messages promptly.

Engagement Matters:

And no I don’t mean your S/O is going to pop the question!

Engagements means how often your customers are clicking on and viewing your listings.

The more people click on your listings and actually buy them, the more Etsy will push them in search results.

Like the popular kid in high school, but instead of charm and good hair, it’s all about sales and keywords!

Bonus Pro Tips to Crush Etsy Search!

Want to take your listing optimizing to the next level?

Here’s how you can stay ahead of the game:

Stalk Your Etsy Stats: Often!

Ok, not obsessive status like your scared your stats are cheating on you.

But Often! Aim for at least Once a week, but a few times a week if you can would be better.

Check your Etsy shop stats to see which keywords are working and tweak the ones that are not.

Update Older Listings:

Freshen up your listings with updated tags, titles, and descriptions every season (or when trends change).

Be Patient!

Etsy Search Optimization and Listing Optimization are not an overnight fix, but stick with it, and you’ll see results!

Play with your titles and keywords. Mix them up in different listings.

You don’t want an exact copy of the same listing but a copy with variations is great!

Always Make a Duplicate of your Listing!

Instead of tweaking the original version of your listing Just in case you had it right.

You want to give your listing at least 30 days before you make any big changes to them.

But Etsy says to wait 60 days before doing ay big changes.

This will give Etsy plenty of time to figure out what customers are looking for you.

If its already been 60 days and your still hearing crickets and not getting any traffic to a listing.

Then its time to throw in the towel! Well at least you tried right?

WRONG! I’M KIDDING!! Never give up just freshen up!

Maybe switch the main photo, change up the title add some fresh keywords that you got while stalking your stats. Mix it up a little!

My Recommendation:

I know how hard it is to wait, especially when you’re not sure if its working!

But, maybe you did everything right!

Ans its just taking the Etsy Search Optimization gods a minute to figure out what tour listing is all about.

Give the gods a chance they’ll find you!

So, After 30 days if your not getting any traffic to a listing do a little light listing optimization.

Mix the keywords up in your tags.

Maybe even switch some keyworks in your Titles. Try not to completely change your listing so its nothing like before. Otherwise the gods will have to start from scratch and that could take longer..

So Then you wait..

Wait another 2 weeks and if your still not getting clicks on your listing.

Start at Step one again. Make a copy of your listing and do all the tweaks you want to and see what happens.

But leave your original listing up! just in case.

And Remember you can have MULTIPLE of the same exact product in your shop!

This tip was a total game change in my Etsy shop.

For the longest time it never occurred to me.

I can have multiple listings for the same item in my shop??

What!! That has to be cheating! Nope, its not!

This was a huge AHHA moment for me!

This allows you to play around with titles, tags. categories, listing description.

And allows you to figure out the exact formula that works for you and your Etsy Shop!

It helps you make sure your listing optimization is on point!
