But don’t you worry, I’m here to help!

Don’t you worry I got you, I’m here to hold your hand through this and get you to page 1 in Etsy search!
To make the process easier, I’ve created a complete Etsy SEO & Keyword Guide <<<(just click the link to the left) to walk you through finding the RIGHT Keywords for your Etsy Shop step by step.
But, if coming up with keywords feels overwhelming, no worries (I’ve been there) check out tools like Alura-check it out here they can really save you tons of time and save you from pulling out all your hair by helping you find the right Keywords specifically for your Niche, the keywords you want to rank for!
But, most of all the keywords that will bring in the cha-chings!
Because on the other hand, the last thing you want to do is use the WRONG Keywords in your Etsy Shop this is will result in people viewing your Etsy Store but not buying anything.
And we do NOT want that!
Here’s an example for you..
Suppose you sell handmade dog collars in your Etsy Store, but you use the keyword “dog costume” in your tags and titles because it’s trending and has a high search volume.
And you thought ‘Why not’ its kind of similar, right?
Here’s Why NOT..
While “dog costume” might bring traffic to your Etsy shop, the people searching for this keyword are likely looking for outfits for their dogs—not dog accessories like collars.
They might click on your listing out of curiosity, but once they realize it’s not a costume, they’ll leave without buying.
And that’s Sucks!
Here’s a better approach: Focus on keywords that clearly describe your product, like “handmade dog collar”, “personalized pet collar”, or “adjustable leather dog collar.” These phrases are more specific and will attract shoppers who are actively looking for what you sell.
We want to make sure you are attracting the right Etsy Shoppers, those Etsy shoppers that are looking to buy your gorgeous dog collars, or whatever amazing thing your selling!
That’s why its so important to get your Etsy Titltes, Tags and Keywords right!
So, lets get into it..
Tagging Don’ts
Let’s start with what not to do. Because these are some of the most common mistakes that can hurt your visibility but, can easily & quickly be fixed or tweaked..
#1 Don’t repeat tags
Use all 13 tags and try to make them as unique as possible.
For example, tags like “octopus art print” and “animal wall decor” work better than “octopus art” and “octopus print.”
The more variety, the more chances to be found. << << remember this!
#2 Don’t repeat categories and attributes
Your categories and attributes act just like tags, so there’s no need to duplicate them.
For example, if your listing is in the “Statement Ring” category of your Etsy Shop, you can skip adding “statement ring” as one of your tags.
# 3 Don’t include misspellings
Etsy search is smart, probably smarter than most of us it will automatically corrects common typos, so focus on making your tags and keywords as accurate as possible.
#4 Don’t add tags in multiple languages
Etsy will handle this for you Stick to the language you chose when setting up your shop (that’s why it asks you when you first sign up)—Etsy will do the translating for your shoppers.
#5 Don’t stress over the Plurals
Etsy matches root words, so “diary” and “diaries” will both show up in relevant searches. Pretty cool huh!? (sorry, apparently I think that’s cool? I guess I’m officially an Etsy nerd. I’m cool with it!)

Next: Brainstorming Ideas for Tags
So, now that we know how NOT to use your keywords on Etsy.
Above all are your tags are your best opportunity to get in front of the right buyers, so we want to make them count!
Here’s how you can start brainstorming tag ideas for your Etsy Shop…
Descriptive Tags: Focus on what your product is.
What is your item exactl, think about if you were to go to Etsy looking for your Exact item what would YOU type into the Etsy search bar to find it?
Examples: 1920s cat brooch, reusable straw pouch, striped ceramic mug.
Materials & Techniques: Highlight what makes your item special.
What kind of fabric or tools were used to make it?
Examples: Hammered cuff, custom embroidery, reclaimed wood frame
Who It’s For: Appeal to specific gift-givers or recipients.
Is it a gift for Mom, Dad, Boyfriend or a gift for a Best Friend then add them. If your item can be given to specific person then that’s important! A lot of shoppers start their search by typing ‘gift for blank‘ so that combined with all your other tags could put your item right in front of your ideal customer.
Examples: Gifts for new moms, teacher gift, gifts for gamers.
Shopping Occasions: Think of milestones or special events.
Can it be given as a birthday present, xmas or a wedding gift? If so use it! – one side note if you are already using lets say ‘anniversary gift’ as an attribute then don’t need to use up one of your precious tags one it.
Examples: First anniversary, stocking stuffers, bachelorette party decor.
Solution-Oriented Tags:
Solve a problem for your shoppers. Is it something that will help to organize their closet? Or will it help keep their food warm/cold til lunch? Or will it help to grow their garden indoors during the cold winter months? These are things you’ll want to take note of while brainstorming.
Examples: Closet organization, lunch box decal, indoor garden.
Style Tags: Match your product to aesthetics or trends.
Does your item have minimalist details, or have a rustic warm look to it? Or does it feel like it came from a certain era of time?
Examples: Minimalist ring, rustic wall decor, art deco lamp.
Size Tags: Include relevant dimensions or scale.
Is your item small, tiny, big or large, is it spacious or conservative in size. Does it have room to bring the kitchen sink with you to the beach or can you barely fit your id in the front pocket? Are they short shorts or do the pant legs have bells? Then you’ll want to note it!
Examples: Tiny gold hoops, large beach bag, toddler pants.
